Our Doctors

Dr. Julia Levesque, Co-owner

Dr. Julia Levesque graduated from the University of Waterloo Optometry and Vision Science in 2013. In addition to graduating first in her class, she was a recipient of multiple awards. During her years studying Optometry, Julia took the opportunity to expand her knowledge and experience with a 4 month externship at the Veterans Affairs Hospital in Muskogee, Oklahoma and participating in a VOSH mission trip to Lima, Peru.

Julia is passionate about optometry and enjoys helping others. She lives an active lifestyle and enjoys spending time with her daughters and husband in her spare time. Julia was born and raised in Sudbury and enjoys practicing optometry in her hometown close to family and friends. She provides full scope optometric care to patients of all ages. She believes in the importance of interdisciplinary care and works with medical doctors and specialists to meet her patients needs. She is involved with the Northern Ontario School of Medical Community Learning as well as externships for University of Waterloo students. Dr. Levesque is excited to take on the role of ownership at the Family Vision Centre.

Dr. Paul Lamothe, Co-owner

Dr. Paul Lamothe, O.D. graduated from l’Université de Montréal, Optometry, in 2016. Being bilingual and a native of Sudbury, Paul was glad to return to his hometown and bring a full-scope optometric care to patients of all ages. During his years of studying optometry, Paul took the opportunity to expand his knowledge of ocular health and diseases with a 3-month externship at the Veterans Affairs Medical Centre in Syracuse, New York.

Dr. Lamothe was also awarded with the American Optometric Foundation Award of Excellence in Contact Lens Patient Care and the Allergan Award for top conference speaker at “La journée scientique – Montréal” for fundamental and applied research of the eyes. Taking on the role of ownership at the Family Vision Centre is a natural next-step for Paul.

Dr. Megan Van Alstine, Co-owner

Dr. Megan Van Alstine, O.D. graduated from the University of Waterloo School of Optometry and Vision Science in 2019. Upon graduating she received an award for Excellency in Contact Lens Patient Care from Cooper Vision. Dr. Van Alstine provides full-scope care to patients of all ages. During her studies she took the opportunity to expand her knowledge on ocular disease management and therapeutics at the Ochelata and Vinita Cherokee Health Clinics in Oklahoma with a 4-month externship. One of her driving philosophies is delivering patient-centered care, which includes personalized treatment plans based on individual patient needs. She also has a passionate for pediatric care.

Dr. Van Alstine is a Northern Ontario native from Espanola, Ontario and is happy to be practicing the region. In her spare time she enjoys reading, crafting, and spending time with her husband and her golden doodle. Family Vision Centre was the start of her journey into eye-care and she is proud to be taking on ownership along with her partners.

Dr. Monique Binks, Associate

Dr. Monique Binks graduated from the University of Waterloo School of Optometry in 2001 with certification in therapeutic pharmaceutical agents. As part of her training, Dr. Binks completed an ocular disease and therapeutics externship at Omni Eye Specialists in Baltimore, Maryland which furthered her knowledge in corneal disease, cataracts, diabetic retinopathy, macular degeneration and glaucoma.

She is pleased to provide bilingual optometric services to patients of all ages at Family Vision Centre.

Dr. John Skilling, Founder

Dr. Skilling graduated from the University of Waterloo, School of Optometry in 1970. He returned to his hometown of Sudbury to practice in the downtown area. In 1972, he opened a small satellite office in The New Sudbury Centre – which at the time was a small strip mall. This part-time location became a full-time office within one year. Dr. Skilling is now retired and has handed over ownership to his once students, Dr's Levesque, Lamothe, and Van Alstine. 

 

Dr. Skilling spends most of his spare time hunting and fishing or just being in the great outdoors at one of his three shacks, as he calls his camps. When he isn't at the camps during the colder months he's enjoying his retirement in sunny Florida.
